“An observation frequently made since the COVID-19 pandemic is how the pandemic unmasked the vulnerabilities of a country’s health system. For Indonesia, and perhaps for some other countries, that observation may be misleading. Despite much progress in the health sector in the past few decades, the vulnerabilities of Indonesia’s health system were apparent even before the pandemic.”
In sickness and in health: Diagnosing Indonesia takes a snapshot of the state of health and healthcare provision in Indonesia, exploring its significant accomplishments and complex challenges. Indonesia’s shifting health profile has been shaped by economic and historical forces, with inequality a recurring theme. Published with ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute and edited by Dr Firman Witoelar and Dr Ariane Utomo, the book features 12 chapters by authors from Indonesia and around the world and across a variety of disciplines. Produced from papers for the 2021 Indonesia Update, at a time when the pandemic had just knocked three years off Indonesia’s average life expectancy, this book is a timely assessment of Indonesia’s health transition.
We will hear from the editors of the book as well as chapter authors Prof. Lasksono Trisnantoro, Prof. Adi Utarini and Dr Tiara Marthias. Dr Syarifah Liza Munira will be the discussant and Dr Andreasta Meliala will moderate.
